If you're approaching 65 or reviewing your coverage in the Buffalo area, you have more Medicare choices than almost anywhere else in the country — and that's both good news and a reason it pays to have local help. The Pane Agency works with beneficiaries across Erie and Niagara County, including Buffalo, Amherst, Williamsville, Orchard Park, Hamburg, Tonawanda, North Tonawanda, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, West Seneca, and Kenmore.
The Buffalo Medicare Landscape
Western New York is one of the strongest Medicare Advantage markets in the United States — a large share of local beneficiaries are enrolled in Advantage plans, thanks to well-established regional insurers and a competitive mix of low- and $0-premium options. That competition is genuinely good for you, but it also means there are a lot of plans to sort through, and the "right" one depends entirely on your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget.
It also helps to think locally about where you want to receive care. Buffalo is served by major systems including Kaleida Health (Buffalo General Medical Center, Millard Fillmore Suburban), Catholic Health (Mercy Hospital, Sisters of Charity), Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Whether a given plan includes the hospitals and specialists you rely on — Roswell Park in particular — is exactly the kind of detail worth checking before you enroll.
Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement in WNY?
Because Advantage plans are so competitive here, many Buffalo-area residents do well with one — especially if they value a low premium and built-in dental, vision, and hearing benefits, and their doctors are in-network. But a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is often the better fit if you want to see any provider who accepts Medicare with no network restrictions, travel or spend winters out of state, or want unrestricted access to specialty centers like Roswell Park.
A New York advantage: New York is one of the few states where Medigap is guaranteed-issue year-round with community rating — so you can't be turned down for health reasons. That gives Western New Yorkers more flexibility than residents of most other states. We walk through both paths in our guide to Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare.
Turning 65 in the Buffalo Area?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window around your 65th birthday, and the choices you make then — especially around Medigap — can affect your options for years. If you're still working past 65 with employer coverage, the rules are different again. Our Turning 65 in New York checklist lays out the timeline, and we're happy to walk through your specific situation.
