Turning 65 comes with one of the biggest decisions of your retirement. Do it right and you'll have coverage that fits your health and budget for years. Miss a deadline and you can face lifelong late-enrollment penalties or months without coverage. The good news: a little planning removes almost all of that risk.
Your Enrollment Window
Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window around your 65th birthday — the three months before your birthday month, the month itself, and the three months after. Enrolling early means your coverage is ready the month you turn 65.
- Still working past 65 with employer coverage? The rules are different — and it's worth checking before you delay anything.
- COBRA and retiree coverage do not protect you from the Part B penalty.
- Your Medigap "guaranteed issue" window at 65 is the easiest time to lock in a Supplement.
