A Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) is a Medicare Advantage plan for people who are "dual eligible" — enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans coordinate benefits from both programs into a single plan, and because Medicaid helps with cost-sharing, D-SNPs often come with very low or $0 premiums and generous extra benefits.
What D-SNPs Often Include
- Low or $0 monthly premiums and minimal cost-sharing
- Prescription drug coverage built in
- Extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and transportation
- Over-the-counter and grocery allowances on many plans
- Care coordination between your Medicare and Medicaid benefits
Who Qualifies
To enroll in a D-SNP you must have both Medicare and Medicaid (or a Medicare Savings Program). If you're not sure whether you qualify for Medicaid or an MSP, that's the first thing to check — and it's often more attainable than people assume.
