Many veterans assume that having VA health care means they can skip Medicare. It's one of the most common — and most expensive — misunderstandings we see. VA coverage and Medicare are two separate systems that don't pay each other's bills, and for most veterans the smartest move is to understand how they complement each other.
The Part B Decision Matters Most
VA health care generally covers care at VA facilities. Medicare covers care everywhere else — your local hospital, a specialist in town, a skilled nursing facility near family. Critically, VA coverage does not protect you from the Medicare Part B late-enrollment penalty. Skip Part B at 65 and want it years later, and you could face a permanent surcharge plus a wait for coverage to begin.
Prescriptions are the exception: VA drug coverage is considered creditable for Part D, so many veterans can skip a Part D plan without penalty. We cover the full picture in our guide Veterans: How VA Benefits Work With Medicare.
