Medicaid & Medicare

Medicaid is a joint federal-and-state program that helps people with limited income and resources pay for health care. If you're eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid — known as being "dual eligible" — the two programs coordinate, with Medicare paying first and Medicaid helping with costs Medicare doesn't cover. It can dramatically reduce what you pay out of pocket.

The Bridge Most People Miss: MSPs

Between paying full price for Medicare and qualifying for full Medicaid sits a set of programs called Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay your Part B premium — and, at the highest tier, your deductibles and copays too — without requiring you to give up your Medicare coverage. The income limits are often higher than people expect.

Worth checking even if you think you earn too much. Qualifying for an MSP usually also enrolls you in Part D Extra Help automatically. Read the full breakdown in Medicare Savings Programs: The Bridge Between Medicare and Medicaid.
