If summer got away from you and you're wondering whether you're "stuck" with your current Medicare coverage until the next Open Enrollment — take a breath. You likely have more options than you think, right now, in July.
Medicare isn't a once-a-year, all-or-nothing decision. Several enrollment windows run throughout the year, and understanding them can save you real money and unlock better-fitting coverage without waiting until December.
Window #1: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)
Runs January 1–March 31 each year. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, this window lets you switch to a different MA plan or return to Original Medicare. It's closed for 2026, but mark your calendar for next January — it's a valuable reset button many beneficiaries forget exists.
Window #2: Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) — Available Right Now If You Qualify
This is the one most people don't know about — and it's active year-round for anyone who experiences a qualifying life event:
- Moved outside your plan's service area (including seasonal moves, like relocating to be near family)
- Lost employer or union coverage
- Your plan changed its contract with Medicare (reduced service area, left the market)
- You qualify for Extra Help / Medicaid (creates an ongoing SEP — you can make changes monthly)
- You're in a Medicare Advantage plan rated below 3 stars (a "5-Star SEP" exists to move into a top-rated plan, one time per year, between December 8 and November 30)
If any of these apply to you this summer, you may be able to make a plan change today — not in December.
Window #3: Medigap "Trial Right" Provisions
If you tried Medicare Advantage for the first time within the last 12 months and it's not working out — network issues, unexpected costs, access problems — you likely have a guaranteed-issue right to return to Original Medicare and purchase a Medigap policy without medical underwriting. This "trial right" typically lasts 12 months from your MA enrollment date. If this applies to you, time matters — don't let this window close without acting.
Window #4: Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) — Coming October 15
The big one. October 15–December 7. This is when everyone — regardless of circumstances — can freely switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch Part D plans, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.
Here's the July advantage: if you start reviewing your coverage now, rather than waiting until October, you have months — not weeks — to actually compare plans thoroughly, verify your doctors are in-network, confirm your medications are on formulary, and make a confident decision instead of a rushed one.
What to Do This Week
- Pull out your current plan's Explanation of Benefits from the past 6 months
- List every doctor you've seen and every prescription you're taking
- Ask yourself: has anything changed? New diagnosis? New medication? Moved? Retired from a job with coverage?
- If yes — you may have an active SEP right now
- If no — start your AEP prep early. Waiting until October means competing with everyone else for appointment time with agents (like me!)
The Bottom Line
Medicare coverage isn't "set it and forget it until December." Life changes create opportunities to adjust your coverage throughout the year — and getting ahead of AEP now means a calmer, more informed decision this fall.
Not sure if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period? That's a five-minute phone call, not a research project. Let's talk this week.
